Hailing from the Wet Tropics of Far-North Queensland and identifying as a Mamu Aboriginal woman, Melanie Hava draws continuous inspiration from the reef and rainforest for her artistic creations. Since her early years, Melanie possessed a firm certainty about her destined path as an artist, with art providing her a secure haven.Raised in the embrace of diverse backgrounds, Melanie's lineage is a fusion of her Aboriginal mother and Austrian father. Consequently, her artworks seamlessly interweave not only the distinct hues of Australia's red soils but also subtle European influences, represented by delicate gold leaf embellishments and intricate crystal patterns. In essence, her art harmoniously merges these two cultural threads.Melanie currently resides in Cairns, close to her mother's Country, where she feels close to the spirit of rainforest and reef. Her life evolves around her three children, gallery, and commissioned artworks.

Quiet Time

This artwork is in memory of when I had my first two children – one an energetic and noisy toddler and my newborn, a colicky baby. With her newborn cradled gently in her arms, the mother sat beside her toddler and whispered softly that “It’s quiet time now, sweetheart, the baby needs rest, and so do we." The toddler’s eyes searched hers, full of curiosity and a hint of resistance, but the gentle touch of her hand reassured them—this was a moment of calm, wrapped in the safety of her embrace.

Love and Life

This artwork is about finding love and connection and honors my grandparents. In the heart of the lush tropical Waribara and Dulgulbarra rainforest in Far North Queensland, where the air was thick with humidity and rain and the hum of wildlife, my grandparents’ love story began.

Walks with the Kids

This artwork is about our mothers and grandmothers taking the little kids into the rainforest and teaching them about the old ways, animal tracks, foods, plants and animals. With one little hand in hers and the other clinging to her side, the mother led her two curious explorers into the heart of the rainforest. Sunlight danced through the thick canopy above, while the sounds of cockatoos and rustling leaves filled the air. Every step was an adventure—with wide eyes marveling at cheeky bush turkeys and creeping vines and as she whispered stories of the old ones, their laughter blending with the song of the wild

The Disquieting

This artwork is about two sisters – in honor of my relationship with my sister. Through every twist and turn of life, the two sisters stood side by side—hands clasped, hearts intertwined. When the world felt heavy, they carried each other’s burdens; when joy bloomed, they laughed until their cheeks ached. No storm was too fierce, no night too dark—because together, they were home.
